Sometimes we just feel 'stuck' in life. It may be due to life changes, goals that aren't realized yet, grief, or a feeling that something is missing. It may be due to traumatic events that feel re-occurring, causing painful symptoms. It could be relationship changes, such as a divorce, or a toxic relationship (present or past). Relationships with people who have narcissistic traits have only manipulative communication styles that can create havoc and excessive emotional distress. It could be due to chemistry or an illness elsewhere, such as thyroid imbalance, hormonal imbalance or diabetes. There are so many reasons people feel overly depressed or anxious.
There are many therapies I have been trained in and practiced since I started working in this field in 2005. I've known and practiced Cognitive Behavioral, Cognitive Processing, EMDR, Solution Focused, Interpersonal, Prolonged Exposure and many more therapies. I have become an eclectic therapist due to this. I rarely pull from one single modality when I'm working with a client. Everybody is unique, so I think their therapy should be unique as well. When it comes to trauma therapy, however, I do not use re-living forms of therapy. With Rapid Resolution Therapy, re-living is not necessary.
Therapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy services are covered by insurance. I accept United, Aetna, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optima, Optum, Quest and Cigna.
Services are available online for adults in Virginia and Illinois
Impressive Humans
I deeply admire people who have the courage to be themselves. It is difficult for all of us to be who we authentically are. In order to do so we must fully accept ourselves and be willing for others to see us. We must go through either real or perceived negative criticism and judgement from self and possibly from others to get to the other side. The other side of this is where inner peace of the self resides.
Sometimes I'm asked if I'm LGBTQIA friendly. These are all letters that represent populations of people. I do hope we reach a time in our culture in which people are just people. What I mean by this is the fact that people have been on the sexual and gender spectrums since the dawn of humankind. I don't know if I'll still be alive by the time this is simply not an issue.
In the meantime, people are going through the fire of real and/or perceived criticism, judgment, and religious oppression just to be who they are.
There is a new book about a young man who finds love, adventure, friendship and ultimately himself in the face of adversity. It is coming of age, growing into the self, and knowing oneself while having all kinds of experiences along the way. Although geared toward young adults, adults can also refreshingly relate and enjoy this first book of a new series. The main character is a young gay male.
And in case you're wondering, no I'm not receiving any kickbacks from this. Nor would I accept it. I'm putting it here because it's long overdue in our society. So here is the link to the first book of a series, 'Sheldon Majors and the Chase' by Jason Waters.
Hypnotherapy is the ability to translate knowledge that a person has to their subconscious mind. This is especially helpful for trauma. Symptoms of trauma have nothing to do with the individuals level of intelligence. A person can be extremely intelligent and still have an event painfully stuck in mind. Our conscious minds and our subconscious minds infer information differently. They 'speak' a different language. So in a lot of ways this is like translation services. The hypnotherapy method I use is gentle and does not cause re-living. I do not use re-living forms of therapy anymore due to this. It is called Rapid Resolution Therapy. It may not feel like hypnosis, but it is. For this service I explain the method fully to my clients. As long as it makes good sense to them, they like the information, and they want it, then I proceed with it. I believe in and practice full informed consent.
Kind People
I often remind my clients that there are wonderful, kind people out there. Hate, fear, and those who want pure power are almost always louder and easier to see. In fact, they're hard to ignore.
Mark Twain once said that 'truth is stranger than fiction'. The following true story fits that description, with an unexpected kind person as the starring role.
It was the end of our daughters spring break. We had visited my parents in southern IL and was driving back home to coastal Virginia. We had stayed at a unique and rustic place in the hollers of West Virginia, and was driving the off beaten path back. There, somewhere in the thicket of George Washington Forest, I needed to go. I set the course for the nearest gas station and realized I was not going to make it. I have humbling moments daily and I thought this was my daily moment. I pulled over.... and did what I had to.
I resumed the course to fill the car up at the gas station. After roughly forty miles, I spotted a gas station that was alluring to me, and cancelled the course for the other. I fueled up the car, got back in, and the car would not start. My stomach sank as I closed my eyes. It was then I remembered that when I needed to go in the forest, I had put my key fob on top of the car. I reached for my phone to see I didn't have cell service. We're talking zero bars.
I told our daughter what happened and we looked around. We were in Millboro, VA. The gas station had a country store with wedding rental building that was closed. Beside it was a house and a man was mowing the yard. This was all there was.
I flagged the man mowing. He stopped, listened, and went inside briefly. Out came a friendly woman who let me use their WiFi for my phone. I used the Toyota Care line. I learned they would tow my car an hour to the nearest dealership, and the service department is closed for the next two days. Not only that, but the tow truck is only allowed one passenger, not two.
The humbling moments kept coming as I called my husband and asked him to drive four hours with the spare key fob. Thankfully he was both available and willing. I looked around... there was a bench in front of the gas station building. Good. And we have snacks in the car. Okay. I was thinking of how I could make this better for our 11 year old when this lady came and was talking to the man on the mower. She approached me.
'Hi, I'm Fern', she said. Fern. That was so familiar. Fern. Then it registered. FERN!! I had rented an Airbnb from her last year. She explained she has a studio upstairs in the building we could stay while we waited. This is the same building at the gas station. My daughter and I walked up the stairs into this beautiful studio in bewilderment. We were stranded... in comfort and style. I thanked her profusely.
Later, after we rested a bit, here came Fern again with a pizza, chips and soda! I couldn't believe it. After she left, my daughter and I made up a happy dance singing, 'Go Fern! Go Fern'! She was turning our misfortune into something so much better.
A little while later, I was thinking we should all stay the night somewhere. My husband has back issues and I didn't want him driving immediately four hours again. It was also going to be late. I talked to, you guessed it, Fern.
I rented a wonderful two bedroom, three bed apartment from her in Hot Springs at a rate that was almost as sweet as she is. We all had a great stay.
Kind people exist. Fern exists. Thank you, Fern!

Online
Initially, Jana was very hesitant to start therapy online. What she found was that it works
just as well as in person, only it was much more convenient for her clients.
"If I knew then what I know now about doing online therapy, I would've done this
ages ago! The results are the same and there's no traffic for my clients.' -Jana Davis
